Whether you are a proficient seamstress wishing to expand your skill base, or an absolute beginner who needs to start from scratch, our School of Dressmaking will have a class for you. Held in our stunning studio in the heart of Belfast our workshops will provide you with the knowledge and tools required to complete each project or module skilfully and efficiently.

Absolute Beginners

A 3 hour workshop which will include introduction to a sewing machine, sewing on buttons and hemming a skirt or trousers by hand, there will also be numerous hints and tips associated with these basic skills – be sure to bring a note book and a camera!

Basic

2 days - a great class for beginners. Produce a simple shift dress from one of our own patterns*, and learn some basic but essential skills to help you on the road to becoming a proficient seamstress. Skills learnt will include pattern alteration for an improved fit, accurate cutting out, darts, facings and zip insertion, but this list is by no means exhaustive, by default you will pick up additional knowledge as we go. Don’t worry if you have no sewing experience; just attend our Absolute Beginners workshop beforehand!

General Dressmaking

2 hours. Learn a new technique every week and improve and increase your knowledge. Topics looked at will include different types of seams and when to use them, sleeve insertion, interfacing, collars and cuffs, top stitching and under stitching, fastenings and trimmings. Again there will be lots of hints and tips in addition to the topics covered so bring a notebook and a camera. This is the perfect class for beginners with a few basic skills.

Thursday evenings 7 – 9pm or Monday mornings 10am – 12pm. Course to run for eight weeks

Bridal

3 days. Explore and learn about the texture and qualities of different types of bridal and evening fabrics. Learn to make the perfect boned and interlined bodice – no more gaping or unsightly wrinkles. Learn how to join and edge different kinds of lace with no obvious seams or darts and finally how to make perfect rouleau loops to give any bridal or evening gown a beautiful finish.

The perfect class for students or dressmakers who would like to move into making professional standard bridal or evening gowns. This is also ideal for the home dressmaker wishing to make their own wedding or evening dress. Dates for this are variable, please contact me directly to register interest.

Advanced

Tailored jacket or Chanel style cardigan. 3 days.

For proficient practitioners who would like to create a stunning garment that includes many advanced techniques including, but not limited to, full lining and interlining, set in sleeves, opening sleeve vents, mitred corners, bound and/or hand worked buttonholes, welt or patch pockets. We can provide the pattern for the Chanel style cardigan but you would need to supply your own for the tailored jacket, we can also, on sign up, provide details on where to obtain suitable(and beautiful!) Wedding Saturdays (Hen Parties!)

If you have some basic sewing skills come with your friends and spend a Saturday afternoon making a beautiful veil for your wedding, a garter, and if there is time, a keepsake bag. We will supply all the fabrics and notions you might need – silk and lace, ribbon and tulle. Enjoy a glass of bubbly at the end and a one of ‘Cakes by James’ gorgeous cupcakes. And don’t forget that I will be there at every step to make sure you come away with a veil you will be proud of and want to wear!

Price: £75 per person. Minimum of four

If you wish to have your veil made with a silk tulle and/ or lace edging there will be an additional charge. Dates obviously will depend on your plans but please try and book in plenty of time.

One to One

Not everybody wants to take part in a group class, if you would like private tuition please feel free to contact us.
